You might’ve heard that all major mobile carriers, including AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, are shutting down their 3G networks. While your smartphone may no longer use 3G, certain inverter models still contain a 3G cellular device to monitor and report back energy production.
To ensure our customers’ systems conitnue to monitor production, Palmetto is working to upgrade those systems still reporting production on the 3G network to 4G. As part of this, we are including a free 1-year subscription of Palmetto Protect Essentials—a $144 value at no charge to those who opt in.
Here is what you need to know about the 3G shutdown and what we’re doing to upgrade customers nationwide.
Why are 3G networks being phased out?
Carriers are making room for more advanced network infrastructure, like 5G. A similar shutdown happened when carriers sunsetted their 2G networks to make room for 4G service. Ultimately, this isn’t new, and we’ve been preparing for this for some time.
What will happen to my solar system?
Production-wise, nothing; 3G does not impact your system’s ability to produce clean energy. However, your inverter will eventually stop reporting production data if the device is not upgraded.
This upgrade is especially important if you participate in production-based incentives, like SRECs. Failure to upgrade may affect your ability to continue receiving such incentives.
What other technology will be impacted?
Millions of devices are being impacted, including medical devices, tablets, smart watches, home security systems, and even certain vehicles—all of which may need upgrades or replacements.
What are we doing to replace your device?
Palmetto has already contacted your inverter manufacturer for you to fasttrack your replacement modem. We expect technician visits to begin in September and go through November. Timelines may vary depending on supply and technician availability.
What can you do to prepare?
As soon as supply is available, we will email you with further instructions. Once you complete the instructions, a technician in your area will contact you to schedule service and upgrade your inverter’s modem.
If you received this email, then we have in our records that your device needs upgrading. You do not have to reach out to schedule your upgrade. We’ve got you covered!
