What the World Needs Now

The way we’ve produced, delivered, and used electricity for the last century isn’t working anymore. It’s delivering higher costs, a warming planet, and a less reliable grid.

Electricity rates have increased more than 30% in the last decade, making it more expensive to run your air conditioning, keep the lights on, and cook food. Even if you haven’t changed how much electricity you’ve used, you’re stuck paying more.

Some of that is due to the cost of maintaining an aging grid and expanding it to meet new demand. Spending by major utilities increased 12% from 2003 to 2023, according to the US Energy Information. That increase was largely driven by spending on electrical infrastructure (which doubled over that period), while spending on electricity production actually decreased. At the same time, severe weather is causing an increase in power outages, which can be inconvenient, costly, and even dangerous.

Part of that increase in outages has to be attributed to climate change, which our electricity also contributes to. While the addition of more solar and wind generation and battery storage in recent years has increased the amount of carbon-free electricity on the grid, grid electricity still has a real carbon footprint.
