If summer heat is still hanging around in September and your ceiling fan isn't cutting it, a portable air conditioner might be on your radar. They're easy to find, require only simple DIY installation, and promise relief without a contractor visit. But they come with real trade-offs worth knowing.

This guide covers how portable ACs work, what they do well, where they fall short, and how to size one for your space. We'll also address whether or not there are real portable air conditioning options that don’t require a vent hose.

How do portable air conditioners work?

A portable air conditioner works like any AC: it pulls warm room air over cold refrigerant coils, releases cooler air back into the space, and vents the extracted heat outside through an exhaust hose — typically routed through a window.

Most units are single-hose designs. Dual-hose models pull outside air in for cooling and push hot air out through a second hose, which tends to be more efficient.

Portable ACs also remove moisture as they cool, acting as a dehumidifier at the same time. The collected water goes into a drain pan you empty manually, a drain hose, or evaporates automatically in some newer models.

Portable air conditioners come with some good and some bad.

  • No permanent installation: Move them as you want or take them with you when you move.
  • Low upfront cost: Most units run $300–$700 with no installation labor.

  • Spot cooling: Effective at cooling one room quickly, which is useful for a bedroom at night.

Portable AC cons

  • Less efficient than alternatives: Portable units are less efficient than window units or central air, partly because the compressor, which generates some heat, is inside the room being cooled.
  • Noisy: The compressor and fan are in the room with you.
  • Hose limits placement: You need a nearby window, and most window kits aren't airtight, letting some warm air back in.
  • Dealing with condensate: Air conditioners dehumidify spaces. Unlike other models that automatically drain condensate or let it drip outside, portable units require you to empty a drain pan.
  • Takes up floor space: It’s in the room with you, not tucked in a basement or attic, or even wedged in a window.

For cooling a single room where other options aren't available, they're a reasonable solution. For whole-home comfort, they're generally not the right tool.

Can you get a portable air conditioner without a hose?

Not if you want real air conditioning.

Air conditioning works by moving heat from one place to another. That heat has to go somewhere, which means every true AC unit needs an exhaust path to the outside. There's no way around it.

What's marketed as "ventless" or "no-hose" portable ACs are almost always evaporative coolers (also called swamp coolers). They pull air through a wet pad, and as the water evaporates, it produces cooler air — no hose required. 

But evaporative coolers only work in dry climates. In humid conditions, they add moisture to the air and provide little actual cooling.

Portable air conditioners vs. window units vs. central air conditioners

Portable air conditioners are the most flexible but least efficient. No installation beyond a window kit, and you can move them between rooms. Best for renters or single-room situations.

Window air conditioners are more efficient and generally quieter, since the compressor sits outside the window rather than in your room. They require a compatible window and block it while installed, but cool more effectively per dollar of electricity.

Central air conditioning is a more efficient option for whole-home cooling. It distributes conditioned air through ductwork, keeps noise outside, and doesn't take up floor or window space. Higher upfront cost, but meaningfully better comfort and efficiency over time.

The most efficient cooling option is a mini-split AC or heat pump, which does away with the sealing problems inherent in portable and window air conditioners and the ductwork inefficiencies of central systems.

Portable air conditioner sizing

Portable ACs are rated in BTUs (British Thermal Units), a measure of cooling capacity. The larger the room, the greater the cooling capacity needed. Here’s a rough starting point.

Rooms with high ceilings, lots of windows, or poor insulation may need more. Good insulation can make a meaningful difference in how hard any cooling system has to work.

The industry has shifted toward a rating called SACC (Seasonally Adjusted Cooling Capacity), which better reflects real-world performance. SACC ratings are lower than previous rating systems. Check the SACC rating when it’s listed.

Most consumer models will list the size of room they’re rated for.

Do portable air conditioners work?

Yes. Portable air conditioners genuinely cool a room. They're less efficient than window units, mini-splits, or central air and work best in smaller spaces, but they do what they're designed to do. Results depend on room size, insulation quality, and how well the exhaust hose is sealed at the window.

How noisy are portable air conditioners? Are there quiet portable air conditioner options?

Many are rated between 50 and 60 decibels — roughly the level of a normal conversation — though some operate louder or quieter than others. Most portable air conditioners have a sound rating listed with their specifications.
